May & June Dispatch
A monthly recap of the month's posts, notable Substack reads and a preview of what’s coming next month.
Hi friends!
I write to you from a hot and humid place, where, before night falls, we go to catch fireflies and spot the wildlife around us. The sky slowly fades into darkness while a summer storm in the background promises to break the heat. Hello from Pennsylvania!
I’ve missed writing on Substack, and, while I would love to share with you the extended version of why I haven’t been consistent with posting, I’ll stick to the short one: Life happened, and as usual, I prioritise my responsibilities over the things that bring me joy and fulfilment. It's a pattern that I tend to repeat, but I can’t help it. I tackle chores like my life depends on it, but I keep forgetting that my life also depends on art, writing, creativity, and community. Anyway, no more self-flagellation; I’m back, and this time I’m on schedule for dispatching my favourite reads on Substack, what happened last month on Travellera and what's to come in the upcoming month.
PS: I’m getting a new camera! I will be making space in my gear closet for the Canon R5, and I couldn’t be more excited! With the arrival of this new camera, I’ve been thinking of starting a vlog about slow living and travelling, in the style of ‘HIGE and ME’ (here’s an example) I love creating silent, visually pleasing, and relaxing vlogs, so in the spirit that I want to bring back, I think it will bring me a lot of joy to produce them.
What’s your favourite content to watch on YouTube?
As always,
Thanks for reading!
On Notes
This was a cute moment that I shared from my studio’s window, and it was liked by many. The Substack community loves the little, cute moments in life, and I do too!
On Travellera
Some thoughts I’ve been having on travel, how we travel and the current issues the world faces.
Overrun
I came back from Granada carrying a strange sense of guilt. I had been naive enough to travel there during a holiday, along with thousands of others. It turned out there was a local festivity, a national bank holiday, and one of the world’s most famous monuments, the Alhambra, drawing in the usual international crowd. It was chaos.
Currently sitting in my drafts, I still have The Blackout: A recollection of thoughts after experiencing a ten-hour blackout across the whole of the Iberian Peninsula. This one was held by the amount of life chores that came my way, but I do still want to share my thoughts on this.
My Madrid travel plan didn’t come to fruition, so I will postpone it until I can go out and enjoy some quality time with my friends.
I’ve been thinking about a piece about colour and photography, and how I found my colour palette in Vietnam. But it’s still a work in progress, so I don’t want to make it too official.
For next month’s Travel Plans, I will share a series of pictures from Sicily to inspire you to travel this summer. I will also start a new series, separate from my usual posts, called 'The Travelling Parent.' As I devote a lot of my time to packing for a long-haul flight with my three-year-old and researching various travel essentials for the little one, I would love to share my tried-and-tested tips with other travel parent subscribers on Substack.
I haven’t had a chance to read much, and I don’t have a list of favourite articles, so this month I’m going back to basics to the Substacks that I know and love. Most of them are also free publications for you to enjoy.
Have a great month!
